Am I humble?

Yesterday

We finished LOOKING at ‘friendship with the world’ which puts one in ‘conflict with God’.

Today

We will begin to focus on the solution to ALL conflict, especially conflict with God.

Open GODcha to the Book of James.

Let’s Ask God For Help

OH Lord, you brought us here today, thus we ask that You quiet our hearts to hear You speak to us. Help us to understand Your Truth in order to live it and know the fullness of blessing to  bring You honor in Your Son’s name. Thank you!

Think About Context

Remember CONTEXT RULES INTERPRETATION!

Context Tutorial>

We’ve been looking at tests that James gives us to prove our faith. He is trying to move us to the real deal. We have seen in:

Chapter 1  – how true faith handles trials, temptations, responds to the Word, does the Word, and is concerned with purity in life.

Chapter 2 – how true faith treats people in need, people who are poor, shows no partiality, and produces good works.

Chapter 3 – how true faith is seen by one’s tongue, their speech, and wisdom from God that is seen in one’s conduct and behavior.

Chapter 4 – how true faith is separated from the world, NOT a friend of the world, NOT love the world, thus, NOT an enemy of God.

But if one says and doesn’t do;

if one has a dead faith;

if someone is operating according to the wisdom of the world,

a friend of the world,

thus an enemy of God,

what can they do?

We read and LOOKED intently at James 4:1-5.

Now, let’s LOOK at James 4:6-10.

Because we are beginning to LOOK at a new portion of Scripture today, you might want to. . .

#13. As you see God gives greater grace, what is grace (don’t assume, look it up)?

Who does God give grace to?

What do you see God commands the enemy of God, who is a proud, double minded, sinner, to do, CR? (v6-10)

Let’s SEE What God Says

Open the LOOK Section

Open LOOK Segment >

Where is the best place to begin?

Always Begin LOOKING

by READING

Read James 4:6-10, asking the 5W and H (who, what, where, when, why, and how) questions to see what God says.

The only way to learn this critical skill – is to do it.

Try it.

Give it your best shot and then come back for help.

Remember to focus on the nouns and verbs.

How did you do?

Let’s try it together.

Did you catch the contrast?

If you are one who loves the world and is an enemy of God, WHAT does James want you to know?
6 But

WHO?

He

WHO is the He? (God)

WHAT does He (God) do?

gives

WHAT?

a greater grace.

Do you recognize the Term of Conclusion?

How does James CONCLUDE what he just said?
Therefore

WHAT?

it

(WHAT is ‘it’?)

WHAT does ‘it’ say?

says,

WHO?

“GOD

WHAT?

IS OPPOSED

                                    opposed to WHO?

TO THE PROUD,

BUT

WHO?

HE (God)

       WHAT does God do?

GIVES

                       WHAT?

     GRACE

to WHO?

TO THE HUMBLE.”

(Remember when a Scripture is in all caps, it is an OT Scripture being quoted.)

7Did you notice the Term of Conclusion?

So WHAT does James conclude?

How does one become humble?

Submit therefore

to WHO?

to God.

And in submitting to God,

WHAT does James say to do?

Resist

WHO?

the devil

and

WHAT will happen?

WHO?

he

(he is WHO?) the devil

he will WHAT?

will flee

     from WHO?

     from you

(You is WHO?

The one who submits and resists.

8 Once one submits and resists,

then WHAT are they to do?

                  Draw near to God
and

WHAT will happen?

WHO?

He

(He is WHO?)

He (God) will do WHAT?

will draw near to you.

WHEN ‘you‘ draws near to God,

WHAT is ‘you‘ to do?

                 Cleanse

WHAT?

      your hands,

WHO is to cleanse their hands?

        HOW is ‘you’ described?

you sinners;

and

WHAT else is ‘you sinners‘ to do?

              purify

WHAT?

      your hearts,

WHO?

HOW are these sinners described?

     you double-minded.

    (Have we seen double-minded before?)

9 Then, WHAT does James tell the sinners, the double minded to be?

Be miserable

and

WHAT?

mourn

and

WHAT else?

weep;

WHAT else are the sinners to do?

let your

WHAT?

laughter

WHAT?

be turned into

WHAT?

mourning

and

WHAT else?

      your joy

 to  WHAT?

to gloom.

10 Then, WHAT does James say ‘you sinners‘ are to do?

Humble yourselves

WHERE?

in the presence of the Lord,

and

WHAT will He (the Lord) do?

      He will exalt you.

Awesome!

Do you see the value of slowing down and asking questions?

Were you able to see God’s word more clearly?

Are you not in awe to see God speaks?  Isn’t it wonderful?

The question is, will you and I listen and obey?

Let’s Call It a Day

Mull over what we just read.

Perhaps read and re-read for clarity, and consider what God has said through James.

May we consider our ways, (Hag 1:5)

Let’s Close in Prayer

Perhaps. . .

OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN, what vital Truths You have given us in these verses. I am actually overwhelmed, desiring that we all will have ears to hear what You are saying to us through Your servant James. Oh, as we begin to dig in and unfold these verses, please, please give us ears to hear and eyes to see. May we be ever sensitive to You Holy Spirit, to Your leading and guiding. Convict us if necessary and grant us the understanding we need, to be transformed and live in the Light of Your Holy Word. We asl this in the blessed name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! Amen!

I want to applaud you for your commitment and time to be with the Lord today. You are doing great!

Next: We will dig in and focus on the solution to any and all Conflict.
