8 WHO?

 You too

WHAT?

      be patient;

WHAT ELSE?

      strengthen

WHOSE WHAT?

      your hearts,

WHY?

for the coming

of WHO?

  is WHAT?

is near.  (See another time reference?

9 WHAT else?

Do not complain,

WHO?

     brethren,

against WHO?

     against one another,

WHY? WHO?

     so that you yourselves

WHAT?

may not be judged;

WHY not complain against another?

     behold,

        WHO?

the Judge

WHAT?

is standing

WHERE?

right at the door.

10 WHAT?

As an example,

WHO?

WHY?

WHO WHAT?

who endured. (THINK: what did they endure?)

WHO?

You

WHAT?

have heard

of WHAT?

of the endurance of Job

and

WHAT?

have seen

WHAT?

the outcome

    of WHAT?

       of the Lord’s dealings,

WHAT are the Lord’s dealings?

that the Lord

is WHAT?

   is full of compassion

and

is WHAT?

   is merciful.

12 WHAT?

But above all,

WHO?

my brethren,

WHAT?

do not swear,

by WHAT?

   either by heaven

by WHAT?

    earth

or

WHAT?

    with any other oath;

but

WHAT?

your yes is to be yes,

and

WHAT?

      your no, no,

WHY?

so that you may not fall under judgment.

Fantastic!

We slowed downand

We could clearly see ‘WHAT GOD IS SAYING?

What was key and repeated?

Did you see how many times James mentions ‘the brethren’ and ‘patience’ and ‘the coming of the Lord’?

How are the brethren told to be patient?

What were the illustrations?

About What We Just Read, and Let It Sink In!

So let’s do this!

In verse 7, what is the therefore, there for?

Consider the Context.

THINK: James just finished warning the rich, who were oppressing, persecuting the poor brethren, and NOW he turns to those poor brethren who were being persecuted to offer encouragement and explain how to handle the persecution.

What are those who are being persecuted to do?

Be patientmakrothuméō; From makróthumos – long-suffering, which is from makrós (3117), long, and thumós (2372), wrath, anger. Slow to anger; to be long-suffering, to be patient (Mt 18:26, 29; 1Co 13:4; 1Th 5:14; 2Pe 3:9), to endure patiently as opposed to losing faith or giving up (Heb. 6:15; James 5:7, 8). Syn. with hupoménō = endure. Involves exercising understanding and patience toward persons while hupoménō (5278) involves putting up with things or circumstances.

Do you remember hupoménō back in James 1:3?

Trials, the testing of our faith bring about endurance, patience.

The Grammar: This is a Aorist Imperative Activeaima.

This is a command!

“Therefore, be patient (slow to anger), brethren.”

“Biblical patience is tolerant of the imperfections, faults, and differences in others. It gives the other person time to change and room to make some mistakes in the process.” Stephen Cole

1. What do you understand James is saying to the brethren who are being persecuted?

a. Pro 16:32

He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty. (Pro 16:32)

bHeb 10:30

Vengeance is the Lord’s, the Lord will repay. (Heb 10:30)

Understand: Whatever the trial, the suffering, we are to be patient, not retaliate, vengeance is the Lord’s.

STOP! And let’s consider a couple of important facts about patience.

2. According to Corinthians, what does patience go hand in hand with?

1Co 13:4

3. What is patience a part of, the result of?

Gal 5:22

Patience is the fruit of the Spirit. (Gal 5:22)

According to verse 7, How do we obey this command?

What are we waiting patiently for?

The Lord’s return.

The promise of the Lord’s Return is our hope!

Understand: James is saying to the persecuted, it won’t always be like this!

Understand: Knowing the Lord will return should encourage us to be patient.

Be Visible. (Mat 24:29-31)

Be a time of Separatation. (Mat 25:31-46)

LISTEN…

Am I living each day in anticipation that Jesus could return at any moment?

Does this fill me with hope in the midst of my suffering?

Respond to God…LIVE it out!

GRACIOUS FATHER WHO IS FULL OF COMPASSION AND MERCY, we thank you for your Word to us that is a sure Word. Help us to receive every jot and tittle today! You have told us Jesus that we would have trouble. It is not ‘if’ but ‘when’ we encounter various trials Lord. No matter our sufferings and/or persecutions may we remember none of it comes without Your permission. May Your Truth change our hearts Lord! Help us to be patient, slow to anger, as You humble us!
