Let’s Talk to God

Oh, Lord, we come to Your Word today excited for You to teach us more Truth. Grant us ears to hear You speak to us, and eyes to see. Please open our understanding and help us live in the light of Your mighty Truth! Thank You!

Let GODcha show us the way in our discovery.

Focus on James 1:5.

How do we get wisdom?

Unlock the Meaning

Let’s unpack ‘ask’ that is Key.

To Understand Ask

Dictionary Tutorial >

Askaitéō:—ask, beg, call for, crave, desire, require.

NOTE: the Grammar for ‘ask’ is a present imperative.

To ask is actually a command that is continuous.

It is NOT optional.

James has given us 3 commands so far, do you remember them?

Now he gives us the 4th.

This command to ‘ask God’ SHOWS US:

Those who have faith, are believers, and can approach God directly!

God NEVER directs us to go through a human middleman or woman!

TIP: Remember to take what you have learned back to the text.

“…let him ask [continuously beg, call for, desire] of God,”

Let’s LOOK at What God Says About

 Ask

CR-Cross References-Word Search Tutorial >

And as we LOOK at these Cross References,

Hear God Speak!

God Talks – We listen carefully.

We Talk – and He listens.

If you want to hear God speak, you must be quiet and you must be focused on what He is saying.

Let’s Give It A Go!

Remember: THINK and REASON by asking questions.

1. In 2 Chronicles, who asked for wisdom? What was the result?

Soloman asked for wisdom and knowledge to rule the people, and God gave it(2Ch 1:7-13)

LISTEN…

What might the Spirit be asking?

What do I ask God for?

Do I obey the command to continuously ask God for wisdom?

If not, why not?

Don’t Forget

Respond to God…LIVE it out!

2. According to Proverbs, what are we NOT to do?

aNOT to lean on your understanding, acknowledge Him in all our ways, He will make your paths straight. (Pro 3:5-6)

b. NOT be wise in your own eyes; (Pro 3:7)

LISTEN. . .

Do I acknowledge Him in ALL my ways? How so?

Or, am I guilty of leaning on my own understanding?

What must I do so I will not lean on my own understanding?

Am I guilty of being wise in my own eyes? Why?

Respond to God…LIVE it out!

3. What are we to do?

a. Fear the Lord and turn away from evil(Pro 3:7)

b. Those who: ask, will receive; seek will find; knock it will be opened. (Mat 7:7-12)

LISTEN. . .

Do I fear the Lord?

What evil do I turn from?

Is it the habit of my life to ask, seek and knock?

Respond to God…LIVE it out!

4. In Matthew 7, what is the result for those who ask of God?

How much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him! (Mat 7:7-12)

LISTEN. . .

When and how has God given me what is good?

Respond to God…LIVE it out!

5THINK: Why do you think God wants us to ask Him for wisdom?

Do you suppose it is to teach us, and help us, be more dependent upon Him?

LISTEN. . .

How dependent am I on God?

Respond to God…LIVE it out!

Hear God Speak

LISTEN. . .

Do I pray, really believing God can and will provide the wisdom I need in my trials?

How have I been encouraged to know that I can ask for God’s wisdom, and I will receive it?

Respond to God…LIVE it out!

Read James 1:5 Again.

When one asks God for His wisdom, what will God do?

Unlock the Meaning

Let’s take a stab at the Key Words generously and without reproach.

Generouslyhaploâs; bountifully:—liberally.

Without Reproach, oneidízō; to rail at, chide, taunt.

TIP: Remember to take the meaning back to the text.

“let him ask [continuously beg, call for, desire] of God, who gives to all generously [liberally] and without reproach [without railing], and it will be given to him.”

Who is the ‘all’?

Understand: the Context definesall‘.

Context Tutorial >

God doesn’t give His wisdom to everyone in the world.

God gives His wisdom to those who ask in faith, to those who believe.

Let’s Bring it Home!

What Did We LEARN?

Let’s Sum It Up!

We LEARNED:

When going through a trial, the place to go is God!

We LEARNED:

The brethren, believers, are commanded to ask God for wisdom.

Those who have faith, are believers, and are to approach God directly!

God NEVER directs us to go through a human middleman or woman!

Wisdom is available, BUT for some reason God waits for us to ask.

We LEARNED:

We are:

NOT to lean on our own understanding.

NOT to be wise in our own eyes.

To fear Him and turn from evil.

To acknowledge Him and He will make our paths straight.

To ask, seek, and knock.

We LEARNED:

We Know:

God gives what is good to those who ask.

God will give wisdom generously and without reproach to those who ask.

OH, what an incredible promise, you all!

“One of the things that trials do to us is put us in a position where no human resource can solve the problem…you can’t do anything about it, … you have nowhere to go but to God. That’s good…that’s good!” John MacArthur

Let’s Wind Down

Do you realize, you just got some of God’s wisdom?

Let it go down deep!

Don’t let what has captured your attention fade away!

Lay hold of what God taught you today and connect these truths with the truths from yesterday.

Don’t Forget to Put Your Discovery in Your Notes

Journal your discovery in your Notes and in your hardbound Bibles.

Add what you are LEARNING about God to your List.

Take it from me, if you don’t do it now, you won’t!

Let’s Take What We LEARNED and Turn it Into a Prayer

Perhaps…

OH FATHER, YOU ARE THE GRACIOUS GIVER, GIVING WHAT IS GOOD TO THOSE WHO ASK. Oh Father, as You reveal more Truth to us, we thank you that You are willing and ready to give us Your wisdom. May we comprehend that You are waiting for us to ask for Your wisdom in our trials. That You desire us to run to You, to depend upon You. Forgive us Father for leaning on our own understanding and thinking we are wise. Oh, may we fear You and turn from evil. May we be quick to acknowledge You in all our ways, believing and knowing You will make our paths straight. Let us know that we know and be ever confident that You are there to give without hesitation, holding nothing back from us. Thank you for such an incredible, wonderful promise – that when we ask of You for Your wisdom, You will give to us generously and without reproach. We ask this in Jesus name, Amen!

Please know that God established a pattern for mankind, and that pattern is that we work six days and then we have one day when we set it aside to rest, and replenish our body, and focus on worshiping God. Rest tomorrow and worship God!

See you in a couple of days: to focus on ‘how’ we are to ask of God for wisdom.
