Yesterday

We focused in on lust, the source of our temptations.

Can you explain when and how we are tempted?

Today

We will LOOK at v13-16, specifically v15, regarding sin and death to see the progression that takes place.

Are you seeing the progression of sin?

It starts with a desire – lust!

Let’s pick up where we left off yesterday, focusing specifically on v15.

What happens when lust is conceived and sin is accomplished?

Unlock the Meaning

Did you unlock ‘sin’ which is Key to the text?

I also checked out ‘conceived’ and ‘death’.

Sin, hamartía; to miss the mark; missing the true end and scope of our lives, which is God. An offense in relation to God with emphasis on guilt.

Deaththánatos; the extinction of life

TIP: Remember to take those definitions back to the text.

“Then when lust [longing desire] has conceived [trapped, caught hold of] it gives birth to sin [missing the mark]; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death [the extinction of life](Jam 1:15)

1. Did you see the progression of sin in (Gen 3:1-7)?

Eve didn’t believe – didn’t take God at His Word.

The serpent, Satan, (Rev 12:9) was crafty, deceiving Eve, and lied to her that she would be like God.

The serpent used desire to bait Eve, telling her if she ate of the forbidden tree it would make her like God, knowing good and evil, making her wise.

Eve saw (lust of the eyes) that the tree was good for food (lust of the flesh) and it was desirable to make one wise (lust of the pride of life).

Eve was carried away and enticedtaking the bait, she disobeyed God and took the fruit, then shared it with her husband, Adam.

Lust was conceived, and Adam sinned with his eyes wide open and plunged all mankind into sin.

Both Adam and Eve’s sin produced death.

They experienced a spiritual death, separated from God, and ultimately physical death. (Gen 3:1-7).

2. According to Romans, how did sin come into this world? What is the result of sin?

a. Sin entered into the world through one man (Adam), and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, thus all sinned (Rom 5:12).

b. The wages of sin is death (Rom 6:23).

c. The person who dies without Jesus Christ will experience eternal death, the lake of fire (Rev 20:11-15).

3. Explain from Romans 6 and 1 John 3:9 how and why believers can deal with sin.

We have been baptized into Christ, into His death,

We have been raised to newness of life,

The old self has been crucified,

We are no longer slaves of sin,

We have died to sin, thus freed from sin,

We are dead to sin, but alive to Christ,

We no longer continue in sin(Rom 6:1-13)

No one who is born of God practices [as a habit of lifesin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin [habitually], because he is born of God. (1 Jo 3:9)

We see: Sin is now a choice according to these verses.

4. What does 1John 1:9 tell us those born of God ‘do’ when they sin?

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 Jo 1:9)

5. According to Galatians and 1Corinthians, what happens if we don’t deal with our sin?

Do not be deceived, whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. (Gal 6:7-9)

If one participates in what we call communion, eating the bread and drinking the wine w/out examining himself, he eats and drinks judgment to himself, that is why so many among us are weak and sick, and a number sleep. (1 Co 11:27-30)

6. What is James’ warning to us in verse 16?

Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.

Did you by chance check out the meaning of deceived?

Deceived; planáō; To cause to wander, lead astray, mislead.

If you check out the Grammar this is a command.

TIP: Remember to take those definitions back to the text.

“Do not be deceived [led astray, mislead], my beloved brethren.”

Let’s Bring it All Together!

Let’s Sum It Up!

We LEARN:

There is a Progression of Sin.

It all begins with Lust. . .

Lust – We each have our own desires.

  • Lust of the flesh, the eyes, and the pride of life.
  • Our own lusts are the source of temptations.

Our Lust is . . .

Carried away and Enticed – baited (Satan can design the lure, but the motivation to bite comes from our own lusts).

Then If We Bite the Bait. . .

We Sin – we miss the mark, the holy standard of God.

  • Believers, those born of God, are no longer slaves to sin – not controlled by sin –sin is now a choice.
  • Believers do not habitually sin –  sin is not a habit of their life.
  • Believers can be cleansed when they confess their sin.
  • If believers do not confess and deal with sin, they can become weak, sick and sleep (death).

We LEARN:

We are commanded to NOT be deceived about our temptations!

If we don’t deal with our lusts, then sin is born and sin is a killer bringing death.

Hear God Speak

LISTEN

Am I deceived, misled, about my temptations and my sin?

What are my temptations?

How have I been lured by the enemy?

Have I taken the bait and sinned?

What will I do?

How will I deal with my temptations from now on?

Respond to God. . .LIVE it out!

Let’s Call It A Day!

Meditate on all that God has shown you about temptation and the progression of sin.

” I will meditate on Your precept And regard Your ways.  I shall delight in Your statutes; I shall not forget Your Word,” (Psa 119:15-16).

Let’s Close in Prayer

Perhaps. . .

OH LOVING FATHER GOD, we are most grateful for Your Word of Truth. Oh Father, we do not want to be deceived! May we remember what the source of our temptation is, our own lust. Help us to be alert to how the enemy can masterfully lure us to bite and fall into sin. Oh, make us sensitive to the tactics and schemes of the enemy, and stand firm in You and Your Word. Thank you that You have given us and done everything to enable us to resist our temptations. May we remember to STOP and pray. Pray that we would not be tempted. And when tempted pray for direction. May we STOP and draw near to You, resisting the devil.  May we sow to the Spirit, walk by the Spirit and experience victory. Thank you that as believers when we make the wrong choice and do sin, we have the soap and scrub brush of (1 Jo 1:9). May we be sensitive to the Spirit’s leading, and be willing to confess [admit and agree] our sins to You, knowing that You are faithful to cleanse us of all unrighteousness! We pray this in the blessed name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Can’t wait to see you tomorrow.

Next: We will LOOK @ James 1:17-18.
