LOOK at What God Says

Let’s pick up where we left off yesterday.

Let GODcha lead us.

How will you begin?

READ God’s Word

Read James 2:1-13, asking the 5W’s and H.

 Engage now>

Focus on James 1:12-13.

Do you remember what we saw and learned yesterday about ‘the law of liberty’, ‘judged’ and ‘mercy’ that are Key?

Do you remember the meanings of these Key Words?

Remember to take the definitions back to the text.

12  “So speak and so act as those who are to be judged [separating between good and bad] by the law of liberty.”

13  “For judgment [separating] will be merciless [cruel, not compassionate] to one who has shown no mercy [compassion]; mercy [compassion] triumphs over judgment [separation].”

THINK and REASON

1. According to James 2:12-13, what will be judged?

We see: What we speak and how we act will be judged.

We see: We will be judged according to whether we show mercy or not.

2. How will one be judged?

By the law of liberty

Understand: God’s judgment will have everything to do with whether we  kept the law

3. What will triumph over judgment

The mercy we show others, will triumph over judgment

Let’s LOOK at some Cross References for better understanding.

Judge and Mercy

Hear God Speak!

LISTEN and consider how you will LIVE it out!

As God speaks, think and reason, asking the 5W’s and H.

1. What does Matthew tell us about our words?

The mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.

We will give an account for every careless word we speak. (Mat 12:34-37)

We see: Our Words will be judged.

LISTEN…

What fills my heart?

What do I speak?  How do I speak?

Do I realize I will give an account for every careless word I speak?

Respond to God…LIVE it out!

2. What does Romans tell us about our actions, deeds?

God will judge and render to each one according to their deeds;

those who do good, eternal life, but those who do not obey the truth, wrath(Rom 2:6-11)

We see: Our actions; our deeds will be judged.

LISTEN…

What does God see when He looks at my life?

How do I act? What are my deeds?

Am I keeping His law?

Have I assumed that now under grace I don’t need to keep God’s law?

Check out (Jude 4) – Do I turn His grace into a license to sin?

Respond to God…LIVE it out!

3. How does Matthew shed light on mercy?

Those who are merciful, are blessed, for they will receive mercy. (Mat 5:7)

Understand: if we show mercy, without partiality, it proves we have received mercy and are being changed.

We see: We will be judged on whether we showed mercy or not.

LISTEN…

Am I compassionate? Do I love others as myself, and extend mercy?

Or, am I unable to show mercy to others?

If unmerciful, do I need to see if I really know Christ at all, and avoid a judgment without mercy?

Respond to God…LIVE it out!

4. Who will judge?

Do a Word Search on judge’, ‘judgment’.

What did you discover?

a. God will judge believer’s at the Judgment Seat of Christ. (Rom 14:10-12); (2Co 5:10)

b. God will judge unbeliever’s at the Great White Throne Judgement. (Rev 20:11-15)

Oh, you might be thinking —

Aren’t we judged by our faith in Christ?’

Absolutely, and we believers will never be judged for our sins, and we will not face God’s eternal wrath at His final judgment(Joh 5:24); (Rom 8:1); (Rev. 20:11-15).

But our sins do affect our words and actions [deeds, works] which reveal our character.

Understand:

Our faith is seen in our words and actions, [our deeds, works].

And our works will be judged and rewarded, (Rom 14:10-12); (2Co 5:9-10).

Understand:

God will look at our lives, our works —

looking at how we responded to our trials,

the temptations,

the Word of God, and

if we showed favoritism!

Do you see:

Our Beliefs Dictate Our Behavior?

Remember the definition for faith?

The 3 C’s? Our conduct reveals our convictions and our commitment (surrender).

LISTEN…

Will my words and actions be judged as a believer at the Judgment Seat of Christ?

Or, will my sins be judged as an unbeliever at the Great White Throne Judgment?

Respond to God…LIVE it out!

What Did We LEARN

Sum it Up!

We LEARN:

In the Context That True Faith Does Not Show Favoritism:

True Faith Fulfills the Royal Law

We love the Lord and our neighbor as yourself.

We LEARN:

Partiality is:

Incompatible with loving your neighbor as yourself.

A sin.

Breaks the entire law, making us transgressors, and could send us to hell, if not saved by grace through faith.

We LEARN:

We are to speak and act as those who will be judged.
God will judge us by the Law of Liberty:

That set us free from sin and death.

That is within on a new heart, with the Holy Spirit that changes us, causing us to love God and others.

Causes us to now love and serve one another.

God will judge us according to:

Our words;

Our actions [deeds, works];

Whether we kept the law or not (loving God and our neighbor);

If we showed mercy to others.

We LEARN:

IF God sees that we have shown NO mercy, then He will show NO mercy at judgment.

Showing Mercy TRIUMPHS Judgment

Whew, We Are Finished!

Isn’t God wonderful?

Isn’t His Word ever so powerful?

Meditate on all God is teaching you about showing mercy and not being partial.

Talk to God! He is waiting!

Turn What We LEARNED into Prayer

Perhaps…

MERCIFUL FATHER GOD, we bow before You to thank you for pouring forth Your love and mercy and grace upon each one of us. Thank you for showing us that You are not partial, and that You love and judge without partiality. Oh Father, forgive us if we have partial, not showing mercy. Oh we repent, and ask that You help us to be like You Lord Jesus! Quicken our hearts when we dare to judge and be partial, so we will not show favoritism. Father, may we be known for our love, loving those You put in our path, and may we be willing to reach out and extend mercy as You have extended mercy to us. Oh hopefully we see now, if our lives are characterized by mercy, then mercy triumphs judgment, and we will escape Your wrath and judgment without mercy. Thank you, thank you most Gracious, Merciful, Father!

Next: We will pull everything together and connect the dots.
