Do you remember. . .

Why Was Esther Written?

Remember: everything written in Esther points back to the purpose.

To tell how the Jews in exile were delivered from annihilation.

Understand: Esther is a historical account of how imperfect people were used by God’s divine power to save the Jewish people from being annihilated.

Let’s Begin With Prayer

And Continue With an Attitude of Prayer

Perhaps. . .

Oh Lord, we come with humility and meekness to receive Your Holy Word. We know You are a good God and desire our best, our good.  May You feed us now, allowing Your Spirit to be our teacher, showing us what is true. May He open our eyes of understanding, convict us where we need to be convicted and encourage us where we need to be encouraged. May we submit to You today – ready to learn and live.

If you get STUCK at any point in your discovery, stop, and pray!

GOD, your Creator, loves you and desires to reveal much to you.

WISE, ḥākām; (i.e. intelligent, skillful or artful):—cunning (man). This word is used to describe one who is skilled or experienced.

EDICT, dābār; A masculine noun meaning word, speech, matter. This frequent word has a wide range of meanings associated with it. It signified spoken words or speech; a command or royal decree (Esth. 1:12, 19).

Did You Stop to Check Outwisdom?

If not, it would be good to know that wisdom means the ability to apply knowledge.

What Did You LEARN

Sum It Up!

We LEARN

The king turned to men instead of God.

The king turned to 7 men who:

1) were wise (intelligent, skilled and experienced);

2) understood the times; and

3) were princes who served in his presence.

We Discovered:

For believers, if we lack wisdom, all we have to do is ask God, and He will give His wisdom generously and without reproach.

God’s wisdom from above is controlled by gentleness and is 1st pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering and without hypocrisy.

Man’s wisdom is not from above but earthly, natural, and demonic. And is easy to recognize as it finds its roots in bitter jealousy, selfish ambition, and arrogance, and lies against the truth.

We LEARN:

The 7 wise men were concerned that Queen Vashti’s disobedience would start a woman’s liberation.

They counseled the king to issue a written royal edict (a decree, a law) and if written in the laws of Persia and Media then it could not be revoked.

Their reasoning was then that all women throughout the empire would honor their husbands.

1. Here is the king making a decision to give Vashti’s position to another.

What do you learn about God in this decision?

Isa 55:8-11

We see and must remember the king has a plan, but God is at work with His plan, for His thoughts and ways are not ours. His are far higher than ours. Thus, He is adjusting events and changing minds to set His perfect plan into place.

Are You LISTENING?

Perhaps. . .

Do I tend to fall into the trap thinking God is asleep, or not aware, or wringing His hands in heaven when it comes to my life and family, my church, my nation, and/or my leaders?

What have I experienced to learn my ways and thoughts are certainly not God’s?

What will I do to remember Isa 55:8-11?

2. As we see ultimately all women would honor their husbands as a result of the king’s edict, what do you learn about women honoring their husbands?

1Pe 3:1-6

Pro 12:4; 31:10-12

Col 3:18

Eph 5:21-22, 24, 33

What Did You LEARN

Let the Holy Spirit

Take you beyond just reading and passing right by what God is telling you.

EYE IT! SEE IT!

SUM it Up!

The King and The Wise men

We See and LEARN:

From the world’s perspective, it would appear this man who rules over 3 million square miles can’t rule his wife.

As a result, there is a national crisis. Because the queen did not obey her husband there was a fear that all women would follow the queen’s ways.

Thus, the king wrote an edict (a decree, a law) that could not be repealed and sent to ensure that all women would honor their husbands, and every man would be master of his house.

Can a man really demand respect from his wife?  The means to gain respect were foolish.

We Discovered:

God is very clear about women honoring their husbands, as there is a need for every man to sense honor and respect from his wife.

An excellent wife:

    • Is the crown of her husband, but she who shames him is like rottenness in his bones.
    • Her husband trusts.
    • Does her husband good and not evil all the days of her life.
    • Is subject to her husband, as is fitting in the Lord.
    • Ultimately respects her husband.

Men and women are equal before God, with different functions and responsibilities.

Marriage is like Christ and the church. As the church is subject to Christ, so also wives ought to be to their husbands in everything, because the husband is head of the wife, as Christ is head of the church. This is God’s design. And as the husband is honorable and respectable by loving his wife as himself, then it is very easy for the wife to respect her husband.

The Queen

We See and LEARN:

The queen was no longer allowed to come into the king’s presence and her position was to be given to another.

We Discovered:

Ultimately, God is adjusting events and changing minds to set His perfect plan into place.

THINK With Me

According to God’s Wisdom:

Was the king right or wrong?

What would have been the wise thing to do?

The king should have swallowed his pride and apologized. He should have said he was sorry and repented for not honoring and loving his wife as himself.

Are You LISTENING?

Take what  you learn. . .

And turn it into a personal question(s).

Engage With God >

Perhaps. . .

1. If a wife, what kind of a wife am I? Am I an excellent wife? Does my husband trust me? When it comes down to it, do I respect and honor my husband?

Or if not an excellent wife, why is that? What must I do to obey God’s Word?

2. If a husband, what is my conduct toward my wife? Am I honorable and respectable?

3. When I am wrong, am I willing to repent? Or am I stubborn? What do I need to repent of?

Now GODcha’s #9 LIVE Question(s)

in the Deeper Discovery

has us consider something else.

#9. When and why have I been banished so to speak?

How has God’s Sovereign, unseen hand overruled the worst situation for my good?

Respond to God. . . LIVE it out!

Now You Talk to Him>

God is always speaking clearly and distinctly to us, cutting through any frivolous chatter.

And in doing so, His words pierce our hearts with conviction, comfort, encouragement and hope, always working to perfect us and make us more like Christ.

Today: Counsel To Banish the Queen

As we finish this Chapter today,

Consider GODcha’s #10 LEARN Question(s)

#10. Compare this earthly king to another King, who is sitting on His throne in heaven, giving us a much better kingdom, never to leave us nor forsake us.

LISTEN to God Speak

And LIVE it out!

Consider GODcha’s #10 LIVE Question(s)

#10. Do I know the one true God who is King over all the earth, (Psa 47:6-7)?

When did I surrender my life to King Jesus, who is over every king, and Lord, who is over every Lord, (Rev 19:16)?

Chat with God!

Okay, One Last Thing to Do

To Wrap Up Chapter 1, GODcha directs us to Summarize the Chapter.

Why you might ask?

Well, this will help you grasp and process what you have LEARNED,

and

Cement this Chapter down deep into your heart, and you will remember it!

Come on try it, you will be so glad you did!

1. Go to your Bibles and  READ all of Esther Chapter 1 to refresh your minds.

2. Focus on a Paragraph at a time.

RememberParagraphs are designated by bold face numbers or letters in your hardbound Bibles.

3. LOOK for the main topics of each Paragraph.

What was talked about the most?

Hint: Key Words will help with this.

The main topics will help give you an outline, and you will see the flow of the chapter!

Jot the main topic of each Paragraph in the margins of your Bible next to the bolded verses, as well as in your Notes.

When you go through this process, thinking and reasoning God’s Truths, then God is able to seal Truth into your memory!

Try it on your own before you go any further. I will help you after you give it a shot!  You can do this! I know you can!

Let’s Summarize The Paragraphs

1:1-4 – King Ahasuerus – 6 Mth Banquet

1:5-9 – The King’s – 7 Day Banquet

1:10-12 – Queen Vashti Disobeyed the King’s Command

1:13-22 – The Royal Edict

Now to Summarize The Chapter

1. I was taught to try to keep my Summary to 4-6 Words or less if possible.

Why?

Because it will be easier to remember.

2. DO NOT Paraphrase!

Use the Words God uses.

Why?

a. Paraphrasing can change the meaning, and

b. We want to know and bury God’s Word, that has the power, into our heads and hearts.

How Would You Summarize Chapter 1?

What about:

King Ahasuerus/Banquets/Queen Disobeys

Perfect!

We took it slow purposely to show you how much you can discover if you are willing. I thank God you have been willing!

Are you amazed at how READING and re-reading helped bury God’s Word into your heads and hearts?

Are you amazed at what you have LEARNED and the intimate encounters you have had with your Lord?

Do you see more and more the importance of knowing God’s Word?

Do you realizeyou have been disciplined to show yourselves approved unto God, (2Ti 2:15)?

I pray you will urge others to join in this discovery and do the same!

Chapter 1 is a Wrap!

Oh, I pray you have engaged with God in a very special way as you LISTENED to Him speak to you personally.

Meditate on everything God is teaching you. “For the one who meditates on God’s Word is blessed,” (Psalm 1:1-2).

What have you learned about yourself?

Is there some action God is requiring of you?

Do you need to confess and repent?

Let’s Bow Before the Father

FATHER GOD, BLESSED LORD JESUS, and HOLY SPIRIT – GOD in three persons, we praise You! We thank you that we can humbly draw near to You, and let You speak Truth to our hearts and minds. May we take what You are saying to us seriously! We are so grateful that You are always there to be our Counselor. Forgive us for the many times we have turned to man instead of You for advise. Oh God, I am asking that You will help each one of us learn to turn to You first. That we would ask for Your wisdom, hear what You say, and appropriate Your wisdom in our life circumstances.

And Father God, as we see the king write this law, we bow before You knowing that You are the KING above every king, president, dictator, ruler. You alone are Sovereign! We so praise You and thank you that Your unseen hand is overruling our worst situations for our good. You have a perfect plan that You will set into place. And because You are the King who rules over all, no matter man’s laws that continue to change, You give laws that never change and are to be obeyed. May we be able to understand something can be legal but – immoral. Something can be permissible in our nation’s eyes but – an abomination to You. Adultery is not a crime – it’s a sin. The murder of the unborn is not a crime – it is a sin. The redefining of marriage is not a crime – it is a sin. It doesn’t matter what laws are instituted in our land, we answer to a Higher Law. So whether a wife, or a husband, may we hear what You are saying and be obedient to Your Law and respect and honor one another. Thank you. We ask these things in Jesus’ name. Amen!

You are off to a great start!

Please know that God established a pattern for mankind, and that pattern is that we work six days and then we have one day when we set it aside to rest, and replenish our body, and focus on worshiping God. Rest and worship God!

What Did You LEARN

Check Out GODcha’s #12 LEARN Question(s)

#12. What is Mordecai’s next request? (v13-14)

Sum It Up!

We LEARN:

Mordecai’s next request through Hatach ( ‘them‘ has been added and not in the original text) was to wake Esther up and stir her heart.

– She was not to think just because she was the king’s wife, that she would escape being killed. If they killed all the Jews, they would kill her too.

– If Esther remained silent, Mordecai believed relief and deliverance would come from another place.

What might this statement been based on?

We Discovered:

God made an unconditional promise to Abraham and to David that He would preserve the their descendants, Israel, the Jewish people.

In Gen 12 – the LORD told Abram He would curse those who cursed him. And promised Abram He would make him a great nation, and through him all the families would be blessed.

In Gen 13 – God promised He would give Abram and his descendants a certain land forever. And make his descendants as the dust of the earth. And if anyone could number the dust of the earth, then his descendants could be numbered.

In Gen 15  – God made a covenant with Abram promising an heir, descendants (KJ seed = Christ, Gal 3:16), and the land. Abram believed and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. (This was Abram’s day of salvation.)

In Gen 17 – God reaffirmed the everlasting covenant and it’s promises, changing Abram’s name to Abraham.

In Gen 22 – When Abraham did not withhold his only son, Isaac, when God tested him to sacrifice Isaac. God promised to greatly bless Abraham, mentioning the land (possess the gate of your enemies), the seed (multiply your seed), and the blessing (in your seed all the nations will be blessed.

2Sa 7:16 – God promised that David’s house and kingdom would endure forever.

In Jer 31:31-34 – God through Jeremiah speaks of a new covenant with Israel forever putting the law within, written on the heart. And God said that if His fixed order for day and night departed, then Israel would not remain a nation before Him forever. If the heaven and earth can be measured, then He would cast off Israel.

In Ezekiel – God’s everlasting covenant of peace is for Israel when He gathers them from all the nations and cleanses them, when He sanctifies them.

GODcha shares that Scholars say: Jeremiah prophesied to the Jews in Jerusalem before, during, and after the exiles to Babylon. Ezekiel prophesied to the Jews in exile. Mordecai’s forefather had been taken to Babylon in the second exile. It’s possible he heard both Jeremiah’s and Ezekiel’s prophecies regarding Israel and passed on the information to his family.]

THINK:

They aren’t in the land that God promised. It isn’t a Jew on the throne. But God made these promises.

Could it be that Mordecai knew these truths and promises and he is going to stand on those promises, believing their help would come from God?

THINK:

There are over 3,000 promises to us.

LISTEN to the Spirit

What promise of God has impacted my life?

What promise do I cling to when things seem dark?

A few perhaps to remember:

Num 23:19; Mal 3:6; Heb 13:8 – God doesn’t change, nor lie. What He says we can take to the bank.

Jos 1:5, 9; Heb 13:5 – God never leaves us nor forsakes us! Consequences, yes, but God doesn’t walk out on us!

We LEARN:

If Esther remained silent, Esther and her father’s house would perish.

Who knows, Esther, perhaps you have attained royalty for such a time as this.

We Discovered:

In John – Jesus said to His disciples they did not choose Him, but He chose them, us. And He chose us to go forth and bear fruit! And that fruit would remain! And whatever we ask of the Father in Jesus’ name He may give to us.

Ephesians tells us we are saved by grace through faith; not of ourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

Paul tells the Phillipians that God who began a good work in us will perfect, complete it, until Jesus comes.

THINK:

Again, Mordecai points Esther to a higher purpose. Maybe, just maybe, this little orphan girl, who has compromised, doesn’t appear to be walking with God, hidden her identity from her husband for 5 yrs, and from others, has been made queen for just this reason.

Context

Context Tutorial >

We left off with our focus on Mordecai. Nobody knew he was a Jew because he had been lukewarm, neither hot or cold. But now he is identifying with God’s people. Everyone knows, because he is at the king’s gate dressed in sackcloth and ashes and wailing bitterly and loudly. Something has happened to Mordecai. There has been a definite change.

Now, we know if there has been a change in a person’s life to be bold (Psa 28:1); (Act 9:27), and identify with God’s people then somewhere along the line faith and belief have taken place. Let’s stop and take a LOOK, because as believer’s we really should be able to explain to others what true faith is.

Check the Word Meaning

Learn more>

Use GODcha’s Word Search and type in ‘faith’ but also ‘believe’ and ‘believed’. Every Scripture where these words are found will appear.

Faith and believe come from the same Greek root word.

– Faith is nounand

– Believe is verb.

To believe is to have faith!

STOP and Learn more> to understand how to use the Word Search to do your own investigation, checking out both words in the Hebrew and Greek.

You will see Gen 15:6. “Then he (Abraham) believed in the LORD; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.”

This was the day of Abraham’s salvation. Gal 3:16 is our commentary telling us Abraham believed in Christ. It is important to understand that those in the Old Testament were saved just as those in the New Testament.

Those in the OT believed by looking forward to the coming of Christ, the Messiah. While those in the NT and on believe, looking back at the coming of Christ and His work on the cross.

And you will see Hab 2:4.  “Behold, as for  the proud one, His soul is not right within him; But the righteous will live by his faith.”

Those who believe, who have received God’s righteousness (meaning they have been made right before God) live by faith. Rom 1:17; Gal 3:11; and Heb 10:38 repeat this important Truth.

Now, to understand faith so we can live by it, we need to understand the three vital elements of faith.

I want to give you the definition I learned years ago, that comes from the Vine’s Bible Dictionary showing that faith is so much more than an intellectual assent.

The Vine’s Bible Dictionary tells us:

there are 3 main elements in faith in relation to the invisible God, as distinct from faith in man and are especially brought out in the use of this noun and corresponding verb.”

1. “firm conviction producing a full acknowledgment of God’s revelation of truth. e.g. (2Th 2:11-12) “

Firm Convictionof who God and Jesus are, and who and what I am, a sinner in need of a Savior;

2. “a personal surrender (a total abandonment to God), (Joh 1:12)”

an Absolute Total Surrender – Commitment: to Jesus as Lord and Savior.

3. “a conduct inspired by such a surrender, (2Co 5:7).”

Conduct:that gives evidence to one’s conviction and commitment.

Faith is:

Conviction,

Commitment

Conduct!

Understand: True faith not only believes,  it behaves!

Understand: Faith is more than an intellectual assent!

Back to the text.

We don’t know when Mordecai finally surrendered to God, but now we are seeing his commitment through his conduct. Mordecai is letting everyone know what is going on, identifying himself with the Jews.

3 Easy Steps

Today: Esther’s Change

Begin LOOKING By READING

READ Esther 4:4-5, and ask the who, what, where, when, why and how questions.

Help Reading Esther 4:4-5>

Remember: Reading with purpose slows us down to really see and hear God.

What happens?

Remember:

Reflect on the events that demonstrate God’s hidden hand.

Let’s focus on verse 4, and watch Esther, who has also been lukewarm.

Reflect on what Esther does.

Did you see the contrast?

THINK:

Up to this point we have not seen Esther express herself in any way. She has been silent.

Not only that, but all kinds of things were happening around her and everything had been decided for her. We have not seen her make any kind of choices and/or decisions.

LISTEN to the Holy Spirit

Am I silent?

Is it time for me to start speaking up?

Is it time I start doing for the Lord?

What Esther does is key.

What does writhed in great anguish mean?

ḥûl; to whirl, to shake, to fear. Can be either physical, as when Saul was wounded in battle (1Sa 31:3), or emotional, as when Jeremiah grieved in anguish over Jerusalem’s refusal to grieve (Jer 4:19).

DON’T STOP THERE!

You know what to do!

What do you learn from the Cross Reference about ‘anguish’?

Luk 22:39-44

LISTEN to the Holy Spirit
When and why have I been in physical or emotional anguish? What did I do?

#9. Where is Esther? What happens? How does Esther react to Mordecai’s mourning? What did she send? Why? (v4-5)

SUM It UP!

We LEARN:

Mordecai went as far as the king’s gate.

THINK:

Was this to get the king’s attention? Or maybe more likely, Esther’s attention?

Remember: Mordecai does not enter the gate because this was forbidden. The king wanted to keep a distance between himself and sadness.

Esther’s maids and eunuchs came and told her about Mordecai.

THINK:

Esther has been living in the palace, in her own little world, obviously not at all aware of the decree because she doesn’t understand why Mordecai is behaving the way he is.

Esther writhed in great anguish . . .

We Discover:

–  Writhed in great anguish means to shake, to fear. It can be either physical, as when Saul was wounded in battle (1Sa 31:3), or emotional, as when Jeremiah grieved in anguish over Jerusalem’s refusal to grieve (Jer 4:19).

– We see in Luke that Jesus was in agony, great anguish, when in the Garden asking the Father to remove the cup. To the point that He sweat drops of blood.

And Esther sent clothes for Mordecai to change into, but he refused.

Why send Mordecai a change of clothes?

THINK:

– Was Esther embarrassed because Mordecai?

Esther knew he couldn’t enter the palace dressed as he was, so she sends him clothes to change into so she might be able to talk to him.

– But the contrast is that Mordecai said no.

#9. Consider how I am like Esther and what I must do.

a. Am I living in my happy little bubble, a palace so to speak, oblivious to what is going on around me that could greatly affect my family, God’s people and me?

b. When have I been in anguish over those closest to me? Do I relieve my distress, and theirs, with a change of outward things? Or, do I turn to the Lord?

Perhaps. . .

THINK a bit more about:

Consider a change of clothes to enter the king’s palace.

LISTEN to the Spirit

How do I try to enter into God’s palace, His Kingdom, His throne room?

Am I dressed in filthy garments, Isa 64:6 ? Or, am I dressed in righteous garments, Isa 61:10; Psa 132:9?

THINK a bit more:

God has given a decree of death for sin. How could an outward change of clothes ever bring us peace and save us from death?

LISTEN Further

Do I think an outward change such as a change of habits; religious ceremonies – baptism, communion, joining a church etc. can bring me inner peace from God’s death sentence?

Or do I realize Someone else, Another, took my judgment for my sin?

What has freed me and satisfied my soul to know that I am not under the ban of God’s edict?

Let’s Bow Before the Father

FATHER GOD, BLESSED LORD JESUS, and HOLY SPIRIT – GOD in three persons, we praise You! We thank you that we can humbly draw near to You, and let You speak Truth to our hearts and minds. As we come to You right now Father, the King who rules over ALL, and look at Mordecai and Esther, help us to examine ourselves.

When did we change? When did we truly believe, having a conduct that gives evidence to that firm conviction and commitment.

Oh, do we now mourn and weep over our sin? How do we enter into Your presence, LORD?

May we truly ponder how we are dressed. Show each one of us if our garments are filthy or righteous.

Have we been silent, not speaking, just going with the flow, quiet about our faith?

Are we living in our own happy little bubbles? Are we guilty of being oblivious to others?

Oh Father, what must You do to get our attention? What crisis must You allow in our lives to move us and shake us?

Father God, please grant us ears to hear Your voice to us. Please remove any and all blinders. May we all understand that an outward change is not what You desire, nothing outward can bring us the inner peace we need and salvation from Your edict. No religious ceremonies, baptisms, communions, church membership, nothing outward can save us from Your death sentence for sin. Oh Lord Jesus, KING of every king, and LORD of every Lord, thank you for taking the judgment of our sin! Thank you for freeing and satisfying our souls. Thank you that we no longer have to be distressed over God’s edict of death. We are so grateful that You are indeed willing and able to change us from the inside out! I pray You would do just that to any and all who are here learning Truth today, and not surrendered to You! Oh, change us Lord, as You changed Mordecai and Esther. Touch us, move us and stir us Lord. We ask these things in Jesus’ name. Amen!

You did great today! Keep pressing forward!

Next: We’ll look at the the next paragraph, Esther 4:4-5.
