How do I stumble with my tongue?

Yesterday

We peeled back another layer of the onion regarding the tongue, seeing it’s relationship to the heart.

Today

We will keep sampling on God’s heavenly bread LOOKING at how we stumble in what we ‘say’.

Because there is no easier way to sin,

than with our mouths,

our focus will be on ‘the wrong way we use our tongue.

Open GODcha to the Book of James.

As We Open God’s Book, Remember To Pray

Oh Lord, as we come to Your Word, we know You have warned us to be careful to listen to Your voice. May we prepare our hearts. What’s crept in that would clog our ears from hearing You? May we deal with it, and be right with You. And then may we do the one thing that is necessary, like Mary, not letting anything distract us or draw us away. May we give You are undivided attention. And Lord, may we comprehend what You say to us today. Thank you.

James mentions the tongue in every chapter,

Giving us a clue as to how we stumble in what we say.

We can LOOK at what James says in one of 2 ways:

1. Read through the 5 chapters of James.

Let your eyes stop at any word that has anything to do with the tongue, such assay(s)‘, ‘speaks’, andtongue‘.

Remember to ask the 5 W’s and H questions.

We can never get enough of the Word.

The more you read and re-read the Word, the more it will be buried down deep in your heart.

Or

2. Search James, by using the Word Search in GODcha.

  2. Hypocritical tongue – says he is religious but….(Jam 1:26)
  3. Judgmental tongue – expressing partiality (Jam 2:3-4)
  4. Unmerciful tongue(Jam 2:14-16)

Are you and I guilty of using our tongues like this?

Type intongue’, ‘mouth’, ‘speak’, ‘speech’, and then lips’

For every wrong use you find, ask God to help you understand what the opposite of the wrong way is, letting Him reveal ‘the right way to use the tongue‘.
Don’t hurry, take your time.

Your goal is not to race through information.

Rather, learn to engage with God.

Talk to Him!

Do what you can do today, and come back tomorrow, and the next. After you search, then we’ll talk.

What did God show you?

Did you see yourself anywhere in there?

Perhaps you have a:

harsh, angry tongue (Jam 1:19-20); (Pro 15:1)

boasting tongue (Psa 20:7)

– in chariots/horses; (Psa 20:7)

– in evil;(Psa 52:1)

– in wealth/abundance of riches; (Psa 49:6)

– of idols;(Psa 97:7)

– about tomorrow;(Pro 27:1)

– in men; according to the flesh; (1Co 3:21); (2Co 11:18)

grumbling/complaining tongue (Num 11:1); (Phil 2:14)

wicked tongue is destructive (Psa 10:7); (Pro 10:31; 11:11; 17:4); (Isa 59:3)

slanderous tongue (Jam 4:11); (Psa 15:3); (Tit 3:2)

evil tongue (Psa 34:13); (1Pe 3:10)

deceitful tongue (Psa 34:13; 50:19; 52:4)

bitter tongue (Psa 64:3)

lying tongue (lips) are an abomination to the Lord (Pro 6:17; 12:22)

smooth tongue of an adulterous (Pro 6:24)

perverted tongue (Pro 10:31)

foolish tongue ends in madness (Pro 15:2); (Ecc 10:12)

backbiting tongue (Pro 25:23)

flattering tongue makes ruin (Pro 26:28)

accusing tongue (Isa 54:17)

insulting (rude/disrespectful) tongue (Hos 7:16; Mat 5:22)

filthy tongue (Eph 5:4)

corrupt tongue (Dan 2:9)

proud tongue (Psa 17:10; 31:18)

abusive tongue (Col 3:8)

gossiping tongue (Pro 18:8; 20:19)

We can understand why David prayed, “I will guard my ways, That I may not sin with my tongueI will guard my mouth as with a muzzle, while the wicked are in my presence.” (Psa 39:1; 141:3-4)

LISTEN!

I just heard God speak, was I LISTENING?

How did God whop me?

Am I getting the picture about my tongue?

Respond to God…LIVE it out!

What Do We LEARN

We LEARN:

The power of the tongue can be for good or evil.

We will give an account for every word that we speak.

“No wonder God put your tongue in a cage behind your teeth, walled in by your mouth,” John MacArthur.

That’s It For Today!

I want to encourage you to spend time reflecting on how we stumble in what wesay.

Consider all ‘the WRONG ways we can misuse our tongues’.

God gave us these truths wanting to teach us, reprove us, correct us and train us up in righteousness – mature us regarding our tongues, (2Ti 3:16).

How has He corrected you today?

What have you learned about yourself?

Is there some action God is requiring of you?

Do you need to confess and repent?

Jesus our Lord and Savior died in our place so we would not have to die for our sins.

Do you and I need to go back to the cross, and confess the wrong way we use our tongues

We have God’s soap and scrub brush, (1Jo 1:9).

Talk to God the Father, who is good and loves you, desiring the very best for you!

Record What God has Taught You

Video Tutorial>  Notes Tutorial >

Just a suggestion.

I am making 2 separate Notes with the Subjects: ‘the wrong use of the tongue‘, and ‘the right use of the tongue, adding my Lists for each, so I can review often.

I want to encourage you to take the time to do the same.

Let’s Turn What We Learned Into Prayer

Perhaps…

GRACIOUS HEAVENLY FATHER, we see again how razor sharp and alive Your Word is! Oh, so many truths today about the tongue, that have pierced us and shown us our hearts, (Heb 4:12), as we see the wrong use of the tongue. Oh Father, we know You give us Truth because You love us and desire to mature us. As we begin to understand and grasp how serious the use of our tongue is, we do confess to You the many times we have used our tongues in the wrong way. Oh Father, cleanse us, and help us to resist the devil with our tongues, (Jam 4:7), by submitting to You, thinking before we speak. Sometimes it may be best to keep our mouths shut! May we guard our ways, that we won’t sin with our tongues, may we guard our mouths as with a muzzle. We ask these things in the name of Jesus, our Lord! Amen!

Oh I want to encourage you and thank you for continuing with us on this journey, learning to abide in Christ, drawing life from Him through the Word.

Please know as you abide, God is completing His Work in you, and you will bear much fruit to the glory of God.

Next: we’ll check out if we don’t stumble in what we say’.
