Why should believers turn the wanderers?
According to verse 20, What is at stake?
. . .will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
We need to understand a strayer, a sinner’s soul is headed to death with a multitude of sins.
Let’s take a small bite.
What do some of the key words mean.
Save, soâzō To save, deliver, make whole, preserve safe from danger, loss, destruction. (III) Specifically of salvation from eternal death, sin, and the punishment and misery consequent to sin.
Soul psucheṓ refers not only to natural life, but also to life as continued beyond the grave (Mt 10:39; 16:25; Mk 8:35; Lk 9:24; 17:33; Jn 12:25).
Death, thánatos (III) Often in the Sept., thánatos has the sense of destruction, perdition, misery, implying both physical death and exclusion from the presence and favour of God in consequence of sin and disobedience.
In the NT, this sense is applied with more definitiveness to the gospel plan of salvation, thánatos is used for rejection from the kingdom of God. This includes the idea of physical death as aggravated by eternal condemnation; sometimes with the idea of physical death being more prominent, and other times subsequent perdition being more prominent (Jn 8:51; Ro 6:16, 21, 23; 7:5, 10; 8:2, 6; 2Co 2:16; 3:7; 2Ti 1:10; Heb 2:15; Jas 5:20; Called also the second death (Rev 2:11; 20:6, 14; 21:8), referring to eternal spiritual separation from God.
“. . .will save (deliver) his soul (natural life and that beyond the grave) from death (eternal separation from God). . .”
Let’s do some Cross Referencing.
1. What do you remember James telling us about death?
a. Jam 1:14-15
Sin brings forth death. (Jam 1:14-15)
b. Why?
Rom 6:23
Because the wages of sin is death. (Rom 6:23)
2. What does God say about souls?
Eze 18:4
All souls are God’s.
The soul who sins will die. (Eze 18:4)
3. What kind of death, is James talking about?
a. Isa 66:24
This is in the context of those who will be in the new heaven and earth, and will be able to look and see the corpses of those who sinned against the LORD in the place where the worm dies not, and the fire is never quenched. (Isa 66:24)
b. Rev 20:11-15; 21:8
. . .the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
And that death is the 2nd death, the lake of fire for eternity. (Rev 20:11-15; 21:8)
Understand: There is a 1st death which is the physical death. We all are going to die physically.
BUT
Where will a person end up for all eternity?
James is talking about the 2nd death – a spiritual death,
separated from God for eternity and
punishment to hell forever.
Understand: Turning will save the sinful wanderer’s soul from death, eternal separation from God.
What else does James say the turning will do?
Will cover a multitude of sins.
Did you ever stop to think how many sins it takes to separate a person from God? To send someone to the lake of fire?
Just one.
Have you ever thought how sinners just keep accumulating sin?
Not only does a sinner face death, but they are chock full of a multitude of sins.
Let’s take a LOOK.
Cover, kalúptō; To cover over. (II) By implication, to hide, (James 5:20; 1 Pet. 4:8); in the two latter cases, it means to cause a multitude of sins to be overlooked and not punished.
“. . .will save (deliver) his soul (natural life and that beyond the grave) from death (eternal separation from God) and will cover (hide) a multitude of sins.”
What does it mean to cover a multitude of sins?
a.Psa 32:1
How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered! (Psa 32:1)
b. Psa 103:12
God removes our sins as far as the east is from the west. (Psa 103:12)
c. Eph 1:7
We have redemption (Christ paid the price) through His blood and the forgiveness of our sins. (Eph 1:7)
LISTEN. . .
Have my sins been covered, forgiven?
Who will I reach out to?

Turn What We Have LEARNED Into Prayer
Perhaps. . .
FATHER GOD, LORD JESUS we bow before You and praise You who are our Masters. Thank you for reaching out to us, for pursuing all of us when we were yet sinners. We all like sheep have gone astray, (Isa 53:6)! Oh, please, please remove the falseness of man’s word’s that may be leading us straight to hell, and let us truly hear and receive Your Truth. Take us all beyond the religious games, going through the motions, checking off the boxes, and come to a true saving faith! HOLY SPIRIT, SPIRIT of Truth and wisdom, understanding, counsel, strength, knowledge and fear of the Lord, (Isa 11:2), thank you for allowing us such wonderful encounters on this journey with God! Touch our hearts now as we see and understand James’ heart! May You nudge us and keep nudging us until we reach out to any and all that You lay on our hearts. May we now be able to speak Your Word, giving the gospel clearly, proclaiming how You Lord Jesus, spilled Your perfect blood for us, dying, being buried and resurrected. May we now help turn precious ones from sin to You by simply pointing out that You Lord Jesus are the answer, helping them see their need to repent and believe, thus being born again! We ask this on behalf of so many and for Your glory! In Jesus name, Amen!
We have come to the end of our journey with James.
